The two main parties have such a stranglehold on our country, they're more like government gangs than political parties, that intimidate voters into making a "choice" for the least worst candidates. They work the system to keep third parties and independents out of the discussion. and often off of the ballot. The major parties are capable of their overcoming their rivalry when it suits them. And like any gang they do it so they can get even more money and power. Sure there are individuals in both parties who attempt to resist being influenced. But that's difficult to do when the rest of their party dips into the contaminated well. To me, the Republicans and Democrats are the candidates we shouldn't take seriously. The third parties under my consideration were the Libertarians and the Greens/Progressives. I sometimes refer to myself as a South Park or Penn & Teller libertarian because both shows are often on point. So I did consider joining the Libertarians. Applying libertarian philosophy to policy helps sift out duties the government shouldn't take on. But the party is on a tragectory that will replace govt, beauracracy with corporate beauracracy. I'll still vote libertarian when I think a candidate will get us to a good half way point between where we are and where we should be. Or for a psuedo-libertarian that wants to reduce the power of elected officials and giving it to the people. I didn't join the Libertarian party because they'd try to pull me too far in one direction, The Progressive party will try to influence me. The difference is that ultimately the Progressive Party is about the issues. They won't pull too hard as long as the issues are being addressed. Yet they will keep me rooted if I begin to pull too far away from what we believe in.
